It’s official: Childbirth can be FUN! The drug that keeps you laughing through labor!

There comes a moment in a woman’s life when decides to start making babies.

Well, we have some great news for pregnant moms that are about to give birth: now you can get through all the painful contractions really easy without needles or spinal tap, just by laughing!

It seems like, starting October the 30th, an official pain management option for laboring moms at Houston’s Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center is the laughing gas. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a colorless and tasteless gas made for inhalation for the provision of pain relief, explains Gregory Eads M.D., chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.

“Although it’s frequently used in dental offices to help with pain, the concentration we’re administering to laboring mothers is much milder, comprised of a mix of 50 percent nitrous gas and 50 percent oxygen,” he says, according to Readers Digest.

Using the laughing gas will not only decrease pain, but also decrease anxiety and empowers the woman to decide how much pain relief she wants to use because it’s a self-administrating drug.

Studies have shown that the gas is safe for both mother and child because it gets expelled from the body, through the lungs, within a breath or two once the mask is removed. Using this gas has no negative impact on the mother’s ability to breastfeed.
